1. THOMAS1 ALLISON was born at Yorkshire, England, on 16 March 1810, and he died at Ridgeway Township, Lenawee County, Michigan, on 22 April 1888. Thomas married at Ridgeway, Michigan, on 2 April 1839, PHOEBE ANN GIFFORD, born at the Town of Vienna, Oneida County, New York, on 19 March 1819, the daughter of Stephen and Abigail (Covell) Gifford. Phoebe Ann died at Ridgeway Township on 21 December 1891. Thomas and Phoebe Ann were buried at the Ridgeway Township Cemetery, Lenawee County, Michigan.
Notes for Thomas Allison:
  • 1810-16 March. Thomas Allison's place of birth in England has not been determined, but one branch of the family claims he said he came from Yorkshire, the town of Scarborough. Another branch states he was from Sheffield. Both may be correct as Scarborough is a port city and Thomas may have sailed from there whereas he was actually from Sheffield. A genealogical researcher in Scarborough, England, has stated that Allison is not a Scarborough name and is more likely from the Vale of Pickering. He also stated that the name could have originally been "ALYSTON." Note: The Vale (or Valley) of Pickering is located southwest of Scarborough, between York and the coastline of North Yorkshire. It is a diverse area of spectacular scenery, bustling market towns and picturesque villages.
  • 1828-Immigration data from William Underwood: "Thomas migrated from England at age 18; landed in New York, went to Oswego, New York for 5 years, then to the Michigan Territory in 1833.
  • 1833-Once Thomas Allison arrived in Michigan, he lived with a Mr. Edmonds and his family for five years, supporting himself as best he could, with what ever jobs he could find. His obituary says that he helped build the Globe Mill dam in Tecumseh.
  • 1838-2 April. Marriage data from The Tecumseh Herald dated 31 December 1891, when Phoebe died. Thomas & Phoebe were married by Rev. Wm. Sprague in the Ridgeway M. E. Church.
  • 1839-Deed, recorded January 3, 1839, at the Lenawee Courthouse in Adrian, describes property as the Southwest quarter of the Northeast quarter of Section No. Nine in Township No. Six south of range No. Five East, containing 40 acres. The property was purchased from James Johnson and wife Maria Ann for $500. Thomas assumed a mortgage for $200 from Johnson, on which he defaulted, with the property being sold at a Sheriff's sale on December 1, 1841, to Benjamin Lirwell of Ohio. Thomas and Phoebe Ann lived in Ridgeway Township until 1852-53, when they moved to a farm located on Milwaukee Road in Macon Township. Their children were all born within five miles of Ridgeway with the records of their births taken from the Allison family Bible which is owned by Lee Kelsey of Milan, Michigan.

  • 1862-January 1. George and Champlin Allison enlisted at Ridgeway, in Company A, 13th Michigan Volunteer Infantry, for a term of three years. The regiment was mustered into service on 17 January 1862 at Kalamazoo and left 12 February, taking its route through Kentucky and Tennessee to Nashville, where it was assigned to General Wood's Division of General Buell's Army. George was mustered out at Louisville on 25 July 1965, as a corporal with a disability pension. Champlin was listed as missing in action, presumably buried in an unmarked or mass grave at Chickamaugua, Tennessee.
  • 1863-A Civil War pension claim for Thomas Allison's son Champlin "Champ" Allison, (No. 356203) contained a physical description of Thomas as follows: "In 1863 Thomas Allison was, according to his family record, 53 years old and in feeble health. Had a cancer on his face, which had destroyed his left eye, and the sight of the right eye was defective. Had rheumatism, neuralgia, and was decrepit, and much broken down generally in 1863." The pension claim went on to say that Thomas was a farmer owning 60 acres of land in Ridgeway Township with an estimated value in 1863 of $1,800. The thrust of the pension claim was that Thomas was incapable of work and that Champlin had been Thomas and Phoebe's sole support. The farm was located on the west side of the Ridge Road, just south of Ridgeway. There is no indication that the pension was granted.

  • 1862-Jan. 1. Champlin enlisted at Ridgeway in Company A, 13th Michigan Volunteer Infantry for a term of three years and was mustered in at Kalamazoo on 17 Jan. 1862. He was in the Convalescent Hospital, Nashville, TN, on Mar. 29, 1862. Champlin was missing in action Sept. 19, 1863, at the Battle of Chickamauga, and presumed killed in that battle. (NNCC File #356203) Note: The Battle of Chickamauga (Sept. 19-20, 1863) in Georgia was perhaps the greatest Confederate victory in the so-called Western theater of the war. It led to a Confederate siege of Union forces in Chattanooga, Tennessee, until Grant led them on a dramatic breakout (November 24-25, 1863) from that city. That provided Union General William Sherman with his starting point in his 1864 campaign against Atlanta.

George married at Manchester, Washtenaw County, Michigan, on 12 December 1875, ESTHER LINN, born at Ridgeway Township, Lenawee County, on 7 August 1839, the daughter of Samuel and Abigail (Archer/Archie) Linn. Esther died at Raisin Township, Lenawee County, Michigan, on 7 May 1896. George and Esther were buried at the Ridgeway Township Cemetery, Lenawee County, Michigan.

  • 1861-1 January. George Allison along with his brother Champlin Allison, enlisted in Company A, 13th Michigan Volunteer Infantry for a period of three years. The regiment was mustered into service on 17 January 1862 at Kalamazoo and left 12 February fro Nashville, Tennessee, where it was assigned to General Wood's Division of General Buell's Army. George participated in several battles, most notably the battles of Cumberland Mountain, Stone River and Chickamaugua. George was mustered out 25 July 1865, as a Corporal with a disability pension.     8. DAVID GIFFORD2 ALLISON (Thomas1) was born at Macon Township, Lenawee County, Michigan, on 23 June 1853, and he died at Saline, Washtenaw County, Michigan, on 19 April. David married at Saline on 9 November 1879, VALINA LINN, born at Ridgeway Township, Lenawee County, Michigan, on 17 March 1860, the daughter of Adam and Polly (Sutherland) Linn. Valina died at Milan, Michigan, on 13 May 1928.

  • On David's headstone it states David "A" and in addition to the children that lived to maturity, there was one child that died in infancy. In the Ridgeway Cemetery there is a tombstone with the inscription "Polly, wife of A. Linn and infant of D.A. & V. Allison." No names or dates are given.

    9. STEPHEN2 ALLISON (Thomas1) was born at Macon Township, Lenawee County, Michigan, on 17 December 1855, and he died at Sandusky, Erie County, Ohio, on 30 August 1922. Stephen married at Stony Creek, Washtenaw County, Michigan, on 5 November 1889, JENNIE ROBINSON, born at Flint, Genesee County, Michigan on 24 April 1869, the daughter of --- and Corneila (---) Robinson. Jennie died at Trilby, Lucas County, Ohio, on 9 September 1937, and was buried at the London Township Cemetery, Monroe County, Michigan.
    Notes for Stephen Allison:
  • Stephen Allison was admitted to the Ohio Veterans Home Hospital at Sandusky, Ohio on 10 August 1922. His home address at that time was 9129 Doyle, Toledo, Ohio. His admission was due to prostatic stricture, pyonephritis, and chronic cystitis. Stephen expired on 30 August 1922 at 3:15 AM with cause of death listed as toxemia. He was buried at the Veteran's Home cemetery.
  • Stephen Allison enlisted in the U.S. Navy on 15 June 1898 and was discharged on 13 October 1889, aboard the USS Vermont as a fireman second class during the Spanish American War. He married Jennie Robinson in 1890 and when admitted to the Veteran's Home he had three children, no names were given. He received no pension and his property was valued at $700.00. Stephen's occupation was a teamster and he supported himself when he was able to do so. His next of kin was listed as Josephine Gifford of Summit Street or 7146 Bancroft, Toledo, Ohio.   • Biography: Myrl was a war veteran of the second world war. He had served in the Navy, attached to a submarine chaser. Myrl at one time had a milk route in Mooreville. He was also an expert rope splicer. He worked for Harvey Young's plumbing and heating company in Milan until heart problems forced him to retire. Myrl had been working near the creek near his house when he suffered a heart attack and died. Myrl and Flossie were both active in the York Baptist Church and had resided at 1508 Mooreville Road since 1921. Per Myrl's nephew, Grant Seth Allison.

  • Grant Allison was cremated and his remains now lie in a common grave at Union Cemetery, with his 1st & 3rd wife: Mary Lowell. Grant quit high school in the 12th grade to join the Army. The time was the WW-1. Grant enlisted 9 July 1917 in Columbus, Ohio: Company 11, replacement. Army number was 3366031 (SS Number 365-03-0284) He went to Camp Taylor Kentucky, where he was a motorcycle dispatch rider and instructor. He was promoted to Sgt. 24 October 1918 in Battery "C" 3rd regiment. Field Artillery. Honorably discharged 10 January 1919. Grant was a farmer and worked in an auto plant. He resided at 1432 Chamberlain, Wayne, Michigan from 1925 to 1937. He was at 122 East 18th Street, Ada, Oklahoma from 1974 to his death in 1980.

When DD's mother became elderly, DD moved to NY state to take care of her mother. Pat stayed in OK care for her aged mother until Pat's mother died 04 Jan. 1988. After Pat's mother's death, Pat sold the home in Ada and moved to NY.
