The Descendants of
SILAS and HANNAH AUSTIN
of
Lenawee County, Michigan
1. SILAS1 AUSTIN, Sr. was born
at Andover, Essex County, Massachusetts, on 3 March 1770. He died at Macon Township,
Lenawee County, Michigan on 6 September 1846. He married in about 1797,
HANNAH --- , born on 7 July 1778. She died in Michigan
on 25 February 1837.
Notes for Silas Austin, Sr.:
Silas Austin was born in Andover, Massachusetts according to family
tradition. The place and date of his birth has never been verified. On the
1900 Federal Census for Lenawee County, Michigan, Orson Austin states that
both his father and mother were born in Connecticut. Silas Sr's father also
may have been named Silas as the 1810 Federal Census for New York has a Silas Sr.
and a Silas Jr. living in Lewis County, New York. Lewis County is north of
Oneida County which does not make for a very direct migration route from
Dutchess County, but is not too far off for Berkshire County (See Notes below).
Silas Austin, Jr. was born in 1804 and, therefore, would not have been old
enough to have been head of household in 1810. If we assume that the three
Silas' are correct, we can now refer to them as Silas I (born about 1750), Silas II
(born about 1770), and Silas III (born about 1804). Looking back to the 1790
Federal Census, there are two Silas Austins that are likely candidates for
Silas I (born about 1750).
(1) Sheffield Town, Berkshire County, Massachusetts has a Silas with an
additional male over 16. This is a fit as Silas II would have been 20 in 1790
and unmarried. There are other Austins in Shefiled at that time: Lemuel,
Samuel, Augustin, Joab, Bailey, Gad and Philip.
(2) Beekman Town, Dutchess County, New York, along the Connecticut line,
between Pawling and Dover, also has a Silas with an additional male over 16,
three boys younger and three females. There is only one other Austin in
Beekman Town at this time, Johnathan Austin.
The 1820 Federal Census for New York has four Silas Austins listed, one
each for Steuben, Putnam, Onondaga and Oneida Counties. Silas III would have
been 16 in 1820, probably too young to be head of household. His first child
was born in 1827. From Civil War records of Orson Austin, Silas II's 15th
child, we know that Silas II was in the Town of Tyrone, Steuben County, New
York in 1818. From the Civil War records of Jonas Austin, Silas III's 6th
child, we know that Silas III was in the Town of Lodi, Seneca County, New
York in 1836, birthplace of Jonas Austin. This would probably mean that
Silas II was in Michigan before Silas III. We also know that Silas II was in
Steuben County in 1818 and that Sials III was still in Seneca County at
that time (in Seneca after 1847).
Silas Austin II and his wife Hannah were farmers and came to Michigan in
1830 from the Town of Tyrone in Steuben (now Schuyler) County New York. They
settled in the Jonesville area (Litchfield Township) of Hillsdale County,
Michigan. Silas later lived in Macon Township, Lenawee County, Michigan and
was buried at the Lake Ridge Cemetery, located in Macon Township.

1804 and he died at Tecumseh, Lenawee County, Michigan on 8 August 1886. He married in
the State of New York in about 1826, HANNAH PRENTISS,
born in Delaware on 16 January 1804. She died at Tecumseh on 6 June 1875.
Notes for Silas Austin, Jr.
Silas Austin, Jr. has always stated on census records that he was born in
New York. His eldest son, Nathan, was born in the Town of Lodi, Seneca County,
New York; sons George D. and James were also born in Seneca County. These
statements are from Civil War records and marriage records. This would mean
that Silas Jr's first six children, Mary Ann through Jonas M., were born in
Seneca County and that the next four children, Calvin through James Martin,
were born in the Town of Tyrone, Steuben County, New York, and that the last
child, Hannah Elizabeth, was born in Michigan. This puts Silas Jr. in Seneca
County 1827-1836, Steuben County 1838-1847, and in Michigan by 1850. His
daughter, Mary Ann (Austin) Gould, states the she came to Michigan in 1847, "in her twentieth year."

Notes for Orson Austin:
1850 Federal Census for Michigan: Orson Austin is listed in Litchfield Township,
Hillsdale County. Civil War Pension File #SC-446-340: Orson enlisted at Coldwater,
Michigan on 27 November 1861 in Captain John S. Andrews' Battery of Artillery, Michigan

years of age, 5 feet 7 1/2 inches tall, light complexion, blue eyes, dark hair with

he lived in Litchfield, Michigan about one year and then went to Wisconsin
where he lived 38 to 40 years and then came back to Michigan. His Post Office

indicate that Orson lived in Fall City, Dunn County, Wisconsin. Another pension

Steuben County, New York. Amanda died on 19 April 1887 or 1889. He listed his three
