JAMES COVELL of Martha's Vineyard, Dukes County, Massachusetts  Notes for James Covell: The following is from The History of Martha's Vineyard, Dukes County, Massachusetts, in three volumes, pages 115-119, by Charles Edward Banks, MD, Edgartown, published in 1911 and reprinted in 1966 with additions and corrections by the Dukes County Historical Society. Hereinafter cited as [Banks:115-19]. "James Covell was on Martha's Vineyard from 1651 on. He was one of the "First Comers" and received a grant of ten acres 27 March 1651 on the Meshacket Path, where he built a house and continued to live there until his death. He was admitted as the proprietor of a half share in 1660, and "submitted" to the Mayhew government the next year. He was elected the drummer of the train band at the same time, and served as a juror in 1659 and 1677. His name appears in the records continuously in the drawing of lots, though there is a hiatus, 1664-1682, when it appears but once in any connection. In 1687 he was granted twenty acres of land in the New Purchase, the last time his name occurs during life. On 19 August 1690, administration of his estate was granted to his son Philip, and he was then called "late deceased." Nothing is known (to the author) of his wife, either of her Christian or family name. He had three sons, Philip, James, and Ezra, and perhaps some daughters, but if so they are not of record. Through the children of his son James a numerous posterity resided in Edgartown during the next century, but there has been none of the name in town for a hundred years past. Prior to his settlement at the Vineyard, he may have been a resident of Braintree, Norfolk County, Massachusetts, appearing on the records of that town as James Covey. There were Indians who adopted the name of Covell before 1700, and this complicates an already difficult genealogical problem to differentiate the various James Covells, senior and junior. The name of his wife is not known." The Covell family left the Vineyard before 1765 and resided in the parish of Eastbury, Glastonbury, Hartford County, Connecticut. Later, the family moved to Lanesboro, Berkshire County, Massachusetts and then on to Fish Creek Landing in the Town of Vienna, Oneida County, New York. Several children of William Hollister Covell went to Michigan in 1833.
Generation 22. PHILIP2 COVELL (James 1), was born at Edgartown, Dukes County, Massachusetts.about 1660. He married ELIZABETH ATWOOD, born in August 1669.
3. JAMES2 COVELL (James1), was born at Edgartown, Dukes County, Massachusetts in 1660 and he died there 1734/1749. He married, ABIGAIL SMITH born at Edgartown in 1662, the daughter of John and Abigail (Parkhurst) Smith.
Generation 38. LYDIA3 COVELL (James2, James1), was born at Meshacket, Dukes County, Massachusettts, about 1685, and died there before 1747. She married on 24 January 1706, RICHARD HILLMAN, born 7 October 1682, the son of John and Hannah (Cottle) Hillman.
9. JAMES3 COVELL (James2, James1), was born at Edgartown, Dukes County, Massachusetts, about 1687 and died at Edgartown in about 1762. He married on 22 July 1713, MARY DUNHAM, born in about 1694, the daughter of Gershorn and Mary (Clark) Dunham. She died on 5 April 1779.
10. BETHIA3 COVELL (James2, James1), was born about 1689. She married on 5 February 1722/23, JONATHAN HILLMAN , born in about 1696, the son of John and Hannah (Cottle) Hillman.
Generation 420. JAMES4 COVELL (James3, James2, James1), was born at Edgartown, Dukes County, Massachusetts, on 16 August 1714 and he died at Glastonbury, Hartford County, Connecticut on 23 September 1776. He married in about 1744, MARGARET FINLEY, born in Ireland in about 1724, the daughter of Goin and Mary (Wheir) Finley. She died after 1777.
25. JETHRO4 COVELL (James3, James2, James1), was born in 1724 and he died on 20 January 1803. He married first, SARAH BEETLE, born in 1728. She died on 1 October 1768. He married second on August 3, 1770, LYDIA VINSON , born in 1725. She died on 29 December 1812.
30. JOSEPH4 COVELL (James3, James2, James1), was born at Edgartown, Dukes County, Massachusetts in about 1735 and was christened on 10 July 1743. He married in about 1756, JUDITH --- .
Generation 539 EZRA5 COVELL (James4, James3, James2, James1), was born at Edgartown, Dukes County, Massachusetts in 1746, and was christened at Edgartown on 21 September 1746. He died at Hudson, Columbia County, New York, in about 1793. He married at Glastonbury, Hartford, Connecticut, on 12 January 1767, HANNAH HOLLISTER, daughter of Captain William and Sarah (Price) Hollister.Notes for Ezra Covell: BIOGRAPHY: About 1772, Ezra Covell and Hannah, and Hannah's widowed mother, Sarah (Price) Hollister, moved to Massachusetts and settled in Glasgow (now Blanford), Hampshire (now Hampden) County, where Hannah's brother George Hollister lived. During the Revolution, Ezra Covell enlisted 22 September 1776, in Capt. William Cooley's Company, Col. John Moseley's Regt., a Hampshire County regiment. After the war Ezra and Hannah moved to Rutland, Vermont, but "Hannah did not like the rough & wild country and persuaded Ezra to move" back to Hudson, Columbia County, New York, where they lived the remainder of their lives. Ezra and Hannah had at last six or seven children, but the names of only two sons are known. Both of these sons, upon marriage, settled in Lanesboro, Berkshire County, Massachusetts, to which place their uncle George Hollister had removed. In 1806-07, they migrated together to Oneida County, New York, where they were pioneer settlers. They started in the month of December, over the frozen snow, with ox teams and sledges, and arrived in Oneida County in late January or early February. WILLIAM HOLLISTER6 COVELL (Ezra5, James4, James3, James2, James1), was born at Danbury, Fairfield County, Connecticut, on 13 June 1768, and died at Ridgeway Township, Lenawee County, Michigan, on 15 July 1849. He is buried at the Ridgeway Cemetery, Ridgeway Township, Lenawee County, Michigan. He married at Lanesboro, Berkshire County, Massachusetts, on 3 June 1791, JERUSHA HOLLIS, born at Danbury, Fairfield County, Connecticut on 1 June 1775, the daughter of Elijah and Jerusha (Goodrich) Hollis. She died at the Town of Vienna, Oneida, New York, on 14 August 1834.Notes for William Hollister Covell: 1 dwelling house, 50 acres valued at $300. 1800 - Census - Berkshire County, MA. GEORGE6 COVELL (Ezra5, James4, James3, James2, James1), was born at Glasgow, Blanford County, Massachusetts, on 2 September 1777, and he died at the Town of Vienna, Oneida, New York on 2 May 1854. He married at Stephenstown, New York, on 6 August 1799, ELIZABETH BABBITT, born at Lanesboro, Berkshire, Massachusetts, on 14 October 1782, the daughter of John and Mercy (Briggs) Babbitt. She died at the Town of Vienna, Oneida, New York, on 13 April 1867.

ABIGAIL LAURA7 COVELL (William Hollister6, Ezra5, James4, James3, James2, James1), was born at Lanesboro, Berkshire, Massachusetts, on 4 August 1793, and she died at Dundee Township, Monroe County, Michigan, on 12 May 1870. She married at the Town of Vienna, Oneida County, New York, on 5 October 1810, STEPHEN GIFFORD, born at Norwich, New London County, Connecticut, on 11 August 1791, the son of Jeremiah and Phoebe (Williams) Gifford, Jr. He died at Ridgeway, Lenawee County, Michigan, on 1 March 1866. Stephen and Abigail Gifford were buried at the Ridgeway Township Cemetery, Ridgeway, Michigan. Stephen and Abigail Laura (Covell) Gifford were the parents of Elijah, b. 31 Mar 1812; George Elijah, b. 30 May 1814; Jerusha, b. 15 Dec 1816; Phoebe Ann, b. 15 Mar 1819; Laura, b. 15 Dec 1822; Sarah Aljanette, b. 25 Jun 1824; Betsy Jane, b. 22 Jul 1826; Mary A., b. 9 May 1828; John Elisha, b. 2 Nov 1831; and Lucy Ann, b. 20 Jul 1834. GEORGE WADE7 COVELL (William Hollister6, Ezra5, James4, James3, James2, James1), was born at Lanesboro, Berkshire County, Massachusetts, on 17 March 1796, and died at Dundee, Monroe County, Michigan, on 21 June 1876. He married at the Town of Vienna, Oneida County, New York, on 11 June 1820, JOHANNA "HANNAH" SCHUYLER, born at the Town of Vienna on 25 April 1800, the daughter of John and Mary (Smith) Schuyler. She died at Dundee on 27 November 1872.
