Menges
Immigrant Chart
I. Background and Use of Table
The large number of Menges family groups that immigrated
from Germany to America during the 18th and 19th centuries has caused considerable
confusion and many hours of research by Menges genealogists to sort out
the various lines. As a means of keeping these family groups in their proper order,
a system was devised by John Mingos which assigns a letter code to each immigrant. The
individuals were then listed according to their code letter, A being assigned
to the first known immigrant, B assigned to the second, and so on. The
chart also lists the year the immigrant arrived, the county or state where
they settled, their marital status, year of birth or an approximation if
the exact date is not know, place of origin in Europe, and any pertinent
comments such as occupation, children, church affiliation, etc.
The listing for Conrad Menges is a fairly typical example
of how to use this chart. Conrad immigrated in 1749 at Philadelphia, was the third
member of the clan to immigrate, and has therefore been assigned the code
letter "C". Any descendant of Conrad would be referred to
as being from the "C" line in correspondence between Menges genealogists. Frederick
Stahl, for example, would be C-7, or a seventh generation descendant of Conrad
Menges. John Mangus would be C-6. These codes are also helpful
in determining the relationship between different Menges descendants. Frederick
and John would be fourth cousins, once removed - four is arrived at by subtracting
two (the two representing Conrad and the first generation siblings) from
the six. The different numbers such as six and seven always denote
a generation gap or "removed".
