2. DANIEL2 MILLER
(---1 Miller) , was possibly born on Long Island, New York, before 1740,
and he died at Orange County, New York, in 1799. He married first
UNKNOWN. He married second, SOFIA --- .
Notes for Daniel Miller:
Daniel Miller probably came from Long Island to Orange County, New York, with his
brothers Abraham and John Miller. His land was located somewhere between Smith's Clove
(now Museum Village) and Monroe, at the edge of Smith's Clove in Orange County. He
purchased his land from Judge William Smith of New York. This land had formerly been owned
by the Reverend Nathaniel Brewster, whose wife was a Miss. Smith, possibly judge Smith's
daughter. Reverend Brewster was a resident of Long Island and was killed by one of his servants.
Daniel Miler is said to have been a preacher. His Smith Clove land was east of present (1970)
Route #17 (more likely #17M). A stone wall (fence) extended from the elevation where the
Westcott Turner residence was built North to and including the present Erie Railroad Staion at
Monroe, New York. This may have been the western boundry of Daniel Miler's land and that it
extended to the base of Bald Hill.
Daniel MIller was path master for District #6, Town of Cornwall in 1775. He made his will February
12, 1779. It was probated March 15, 1799. LIbra B, Page 72, Surrogates office, Goshen, Orange
County, New York. He mentions his Cheescock (Chesekook) Patent lot and the Mill that he built with
all improvements. He owned and operated a saw mill and a grist mill which were destroyed by fire
during the Revolutionary War. He had not complete rebuilding them at the time of his death in 1799,
but he wanted the work completed, then they were to be the property of his son John Miller.
Daniel Miller give two acres of a hickory grove as a site for the Smith's Clove Meeting House
(Presbyterian Church of Cheesecocks). According to the History of Orange County, New York, compiled
by E.M. Ruttenber and L. H. Clark, 1980, page 796, a building was raised on it 28 May 1783. In later
years, burials were made in the Church Yard. Now it is the site of the Seamanville Cemetery at Monroe,
New York. At the time the Church was organized, William Miller, Jr. was on of the deacons of the
congregation and trustees named in the instrument of organization were William Miller, Jr. and Aaron Miller.
Original member of the church included William Miller, Jr. and wife, and John Miller and wife. The church
building was replaced by a new one erected on the original site and dedicated February 15, 1853.
Executors of his will were John Miller, son, Abraham Miller, brother, and Moses Cunningham. The
witnesses were Charles Webb, Andrew Webb and John McKelsey.
